Independent Media Future? I Hope

When Arcade Fire's The Suberbs won the grammy for "Album Of The Year" and nominations in the awards ceremony that included the likes of Florenced and the Machine, Broken Bells and Mumford & Sons. Strange that a band not many people even listen to, and on an indie label like Arcade Fire would win a grammy, but it happened. Very suprised that it won, even when put up against pop and rap and commercial rock bands and artists that usually dominated the music industry.

Are we at a changing point? Not with just music, but with film industry too. Just look at how large of an impact internet media plays on our lives, even helping it into mainstream eyes, such as the homeless man who became a sensation over a short Youtube video or maybe a band getting big with the help of social networking sites.

It seems as if the independency of the internet is influencing the music, film and shows we watch. I can see a future with Youtube and Netflix merged into an open pool of media. The ability for anyone to create shows and watch them over a very internet based sorce. Think of there being 100's of independent digital radio stations and not with the intentions of playing the same Lil Wayne song all day, but to actually get people into new music, give people that true variety, that I could very well start if I wanted to. "The growing number of public radio listeners speaks to the hunger for independent local media sources" said National Public Radio president Vivian Schiller. People are tired of having the music they listen to, shows they watch and movies they want to view all shoved down their throat. We want choice, many options, maybe local; thus a very independent based media. I just wonder how copyright and freedom of speech will play in this, but it's nice to dream about. Got a little off topic, maybe not the best written blog post, but you get the idea and I'm sure excited to see an independent media future due to the growth of technology, and desires of the public. Maybe with more options will come the ability for people to grow as more of individuals.

  1. One of the more positive views of the future. But you are right about copyright. I'm sure any freedom given will be blocked by it. Seems they always want to take the happy away from us.

  2. I actually just checked out Arcade Fire. I read the most "liked" comment. It is very true. here it is.
"It's amazing how many people fill these comments with "I don't get it, why is this so good?" comments. The reason you wanted Eminem to win and not Arcade Fire is the same reason he lost; Arcade Fire sings songs about things you don't have words for but already understand. Eminem's music is about things you already know, and you can already describe. Art is about making things mean something different than the rubber stamp of modern music."
    Nuff said.

  3. "To understand why Arcade Fire won Album of the year, you have to listen to their album in its entirety. Albums should have underlying themes and connectivity. The Suburbs are what all albums should strive to be like. The underlying tone of the album, the way the songs transition into each other, this is a work of art. Its not about mashing together a bunch of singles, some people will never get this. " Said another "liked" comment.

I can't agree more with both of these.

And about the copyright, who knows. Maybe the labels and bands will start seeing that just suing everyone is a losing battle, because there's just too many people.

  4. For a "political" event such as the grammys, I am shocked that an "underdog" did in fact win. Maybe there is still hope in this world. Iron Maiden won their first grammy as well. They didn't really care because every year it's the same bullshit. Shitty mainstream sellout bands win. I wonder why this year is any different. Maybe people are finally starting to understand that this world is the way it is because of all the "politics". People need to see the truth. Music tells the truth. Maybe people will start to see that. I'm glad there are bands that are still creative and don't fall into the same old sellout scene all the top artists in the US did. People just need to stop being stupid and educate themselves on the finer things in life. It may take a little more work to do it, but it would make our country a better place I believe. Music does that. People who understand that should be the ones on top of this country. Not idiots who only care to make a million songs with the exact same themes. Drugs and sex. But it's easy. Anyone can do it. That's why they are "number 1". It's easy to understand without having to think. American's like that. Laziest country in the world. Sorry I just blogged on your blog! haha this is just a really good subject.
